Air filters have a very clear and simple function, separating moisture and debris from the air that passes through it.
When the air compressor works, condensation is generated and accumulated in the air tank.
Installing the air filter between the compressor and the reservoir will limit the amount of moisture accumulated in the air tank. It will also collect possible debris that could reach the set of valves causing the system to malfunction.
